Helping people feel – and be – their best… mentally, physically, and emotionally.
That’s what Peter Berndt, M.D., and Avery Slechta, M.A., do – whether they’re working with individuals in private sessions, with company executives or employees in a stress management program, with patients in assisted living centers and nursing homes, or facilitating family support groups.
Berndt and Slechta believe that:
- People have an innate wish for balance and health. Berndt and Slechta then align themselves with that inner force, supporting and encouraging healthy behaviors.
- Many people experience problems because they’ve never learned effective ways to express their feelings. Berndt and Slechta assist their clients in recognizing feelings and expressing them in words so that it won’t manifest as medical or psychological illness.
- Psychotherapy, an educational process done in a non-critical and supportive environment, helps people learn new behaviors and ways of thinking. They can then successfully integrate those changes into their daily lives, which would then become a habit.
Their primary focuses are on:
- Stress-related medical and psychiatric illness
- Grief and bereavement
- Interpersonal relationships
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and related syndromes
- Depression (including post-partum depression)
- Anxiety
- Pain syndromes
- Work-related issues (stress management, conflict resolution, change management, team building, and creative/innovative-thinking workshops)
- Clinical hypnosis for relaxation training, conditioning for childbirth, and treatment of habit disorders (smoking cessation, weight control, fear of flying and other phobias)
- Pregnancy and postpartum related issues
Berndt and Slechta are a stepfather/stepdaughter team who share similar outlooks and are delighted to have formed a collaborative relationship; in their practice, they work individually and together. Berndt praises Slechta for her wisdom and integrity, while Slechta admires Berndt’s views on psychiatry and his intellectual curiosity. Both have a tremendous amount of respect for each other.
